Fear of failure is an emotion everyone experiences in some phase of their life.
Why do you fear failure?
Failure obviously means lack of success. You are respected by the world only when you are successful. So failure makes you feel worthless, useless and insignificant. You shrink yourself into a world of negativity about you.
What does fear of failure do to you?
- It makes you depressed and gloomy.
- You easily give up.
- You never try for your success as you feel you are destined to fail.
- Fear of failure de-motivates you.
- You buckle under the pressure of problems you face.
- You do not want to try.
- You become a recluse shying away from people
Can you see how negative you are because of your fear of failure?
Do you know most successful whom you envy were abject failures in the initial stages of their life?
- Oprah Winfrey
- Walt Disney
- Thomas Edison
- Albert Einstein
People who attained incredible success in their respective fields failed initially. But they never feared their failure. They kept trying till one day they achieved overwhelming success. If they had stopped fighting they would have gone into obscurity.
‘When your back is to the wall and you are facing fear head on, the only way is forward and through it’ – Stephen Richards.
Do you think I am fearless?
I too experience fear of failure now and then. I have a blog that deals with multiple problems of life. But I am not a great success. In my inner mind I feel overshadowed by the more successful bloggers. When I visit their blog I feel overwhelmed by the number of subscribers they have. They have thousands of likes in Facebook whereas I have just a few.
Will my blog also be as successful as theirs?
Why don’t people like my blog in Facebook?
Why are my viewers only a few hundred though I write good posts?
So fear of failure does plague me too. But I never bow my knees to it. ‘Enough of fear and more of try’ I have told myself.
I know I will succeed one day. I will never stop trying till I achieve what I am aiming at.
Fear of failure –overcome it to achieve the success you want.
1. Do not over-estimate others
Do you over-estimate others?
Never ever do that.
If underestimating yourself is bad, overestimating others is even worse.
- Successful people make you overawed by their accomplishment.
- You feel a lesser person before them.
- You put them in a pedestal as you are intimidated by the incredible status they enjoy in the society.
- You fear meeting them as you think you will be rebuffed.
Understand that these successful people are just like you and me. The only difference is that they have overcome their negative qualities to achieve fame. They still have apprehensions and fears about sustaining their prominence.
But they hide their fear by putting up with a façade of self-confidence and self-assurance. Their pretense becomes a habit with them. Gradually the habit of assurance becomes their second nature.
- You too can have their success if you work relentlessly.
- When you are moving towards your goal, fear of failure will lurk in every nook and corner.
- Never look back at your failures.
- Always look ahead.
- Bright future is just awaiting round the corner.
2. Keep trying again and again
You want to hit the jackpot of success in your first attempt. But success never works that way. It is an uphill task.
Do not be cowed down by your initial failures.
If success was easy you will not make efforts for your final triumph. Your mind becomes dull and lethargic as you assume that you will always win. You are smug that you will not fail.
Very wrong assumption!
Your early failures are all precious lessons to make you work differently and efficiently.
You never learn lessons from the failure of others. But when you venture into your work you find how difficult it is to achieve success.
You will commit mistakes. But never let go.
My sister’s grandson is a delight. I was watching in amazement when took his first tottering steps. He fell down and cried. My sister rushed to pick him up, but he was not fazed. He again and again took his baby steps and again and again he fell down. But he never stopped trying. He smiled angelically when he gradually walked with confidence.
How could a child be so persistent in walking when he initially kept falling?
His mind did not have any reservations about his capacity. He was fearless and kept trying even when he hurt himself in the process.
Try and try again. Try till you succeed. Never leave midway in your fear of failure. You will be an abject failure if you do so. But when you try and keep trying you will eventually succeed.
3. Train your mind
Your mind is like a pet dog. It will do what you command it to do. But most of you do not understand the power of your mind. It awaits for your commands. Sadly your give negative commands to your mind. You say ‘I cannot do it’. Your mind meekly accepts it.
When your mind is closed to optimistic thoughts, fear enters your mind like a thief. It steals your will power, your capability and your total potential.
What do you do to protect your house from thieves?
You secure it with locks, alarm systems to make your house impregnable and safe against any theft. Likewise, you should secure your mind against fear, apprehension, anxiety and pessimistic assumptions.
4. Fear is nothing, but an assumption
Why do you fear your future?
Your present failures makes you assume that you will be a failure in the future also.
Why should your failure be a continuation?
Persistent failures always makes you feel that it is a continuous process. You feel that failures will plague you throughout your life.
Failures make your life very gloomy and frightening.
Fear of failure is like standing in the darkness frightened to move as you feel that you will tread on something dreadful.
Why horror movies are mostly filmed in the dark?
Darkness gives an air of fearful suspense.
It is the same in your life. Fear is darkness and in darkness you only assume fearful things that makes your life torturous. Your self confidence is like a torch which can pierce the darkness. So refrain from making negative assumptions.
5. Walk through your fear
‘Nothing in life is to be feared. it is only to be understood’ – Marie Curie
I was watching a buffalo being chased by a lion in Animal Planet. The poor buffalo was running for his dear life. I thought that the buffalo was a goner. But what happened next amazed me. Suddenly the buffalo turned back and started chasing lion. Now the lion was running to save himself from the powerful hooves of the buffalo. He hurriedly got up on the lower branch of the tree to escape the buffalo.
The terror in the face of the lion surprised me. The lion got down only when the buffalo lost interest in him. If the buffalo had given in to his fear for the lion, he would have provided a sumptuous meal to the pride of lions. But when he overcame his fear to attack the lion he won.
Do not shirk away from your fear of failure. Go towards your fear. You will be amazed when you see it taking a step back. Each of your confident steps makes fear take furtive steps backwards until it disappears from your sight. Forge ahead and achieve the success which had eluded you so far.
