A good professional writer easily expresses his thoughts with his pen.
‘There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed’- Ernest Hemmingway
What makes you a good writer?
- Knowledge about what you are writing about.
- Writing with passion.
- Writing with an easy flow of thoughts and cohesion.
- Faultless grammar.
- Ability to choose ever interesting topics to keep your readers engaged.
Become a good professional writer by following these easy tips
1. Know what you are writing about
You cannot write about anything and everything.
No writer possess such an all-round expertise.
You should have knowledge about what you are writing about.
I know nothing about the technology aspect of starting a blog. If I write about it my readers instantly sense that I do not have the expertise for it.
But I have good insight about relationships, health, parenting and self-improvement. When I write I concentrate on these topics as I am passionate about it.
So you have limitations in choosing the topics.
Choose your forte to be known as a good professional writer.
2. Research and write
When you write about historical topics be very careful about the dates, name of people involved and the place.
Any wrong information will give you a negative image.
If you are writing about statistics about certain things be accurate.
If you are writing about technology, your technical terms should be correct and precise.
Be logical and coherent.
3. Proof read with concentration
If your writing is full of grammatical errors readers feel disinterested to read on.
Check for spelling mistakes.
Read loudly while proof reading. It is a small trick which enables you to find logical and grammatical mistakes with ease.
Another small trick.
Never proof read immediately after writing an article.
Your mind is still filled with the same thoughts you had when you were writing the article. You have nothing new to add.
But when you proof read your article the next day you will be surprised by the new thoughts and ideas you develop about the same topic.
Your article will now sport a more new and more informative look.
4.Go step by step
You cannot hope to have a cohesive article instantly. If you look for immediate perfection you will experience writer’s mental block.
First write down points about the topic you are writing.
Then begin elaborating your points.
Be conversational. It instantly links you with your readers.
Short paragraph are easy to the eye.
Numbering and bulleting while writing is yet another trick to easy reading.
If you are too prosy readers feel bored to read through your article.
Don’t use high-flown language
Not all your readers are intelligent and proficient in English. If you use extravagant words you can at best prove you have good knowledge about English.
But if you can make a layman understand your views your success as a good professional writer is complete.
5. Add incidents to add spice
When you write about real life incidents readers like it. Incidents from real persons make them feel interested.
What if you have no incidents to write?
Write from your imagination. Make the incident sound real by making yourself as a first hand spectator.
Is this not cheating your readers?
Not at all.
You are not wrecking any real persons.
You are just adding spice to your writing.
Incidents from real life makes your readers instantly engrossed in what you intend to say.
6. Be a keen observer
A good professional writer always observes what is happening around him.
I saw a mother and her small daughter walking in front of me during my usual walk. From the distance I could see the mother was very angry with her daughter.
As I came nearer I winced with regret when I heard the hot words of the mother. She was literally yelling at the small girl.
‘You have no brains. You have failed in many subjects. I do not know why I am spending lots of money for your education. You are no good’ the mother went on and on while the little girl literally cringed in shame. She hung her head in humiliation as many were watching them.
This was plain child abuse, I told myself.
When I went home I wrote an article about how parents abuse their children.
So topics are all around you.
7. Edit ruthlessly
You may have written a painstakingly lengthy article. But when your sentences do not add any value to your writing delete it ruthlessly.
A big article with unwanted paragraphs does not serve any purpose.
A small article with words adding true meaning to your article is far better.
So the length of your article does not matter. It is the quality of your content that is important.
8. Practice makes perfection
Unless you keep writing consistently you can never evolve into a good writer.
When you keep on writing you find vast improvements in the way you present your articles.
Your English improves.
Your writing style makes good progression.
You become very fluent and proficient in expressing your thoughts.
9. Your satisfaction is very important
Are you feeling dissatisfied with what you have written?
It means you have not written well.
As a good professional writer you should feel satisfied when you read your article.
Your satisfaction means your readers will also feel satisfied with your article.
Your readers find your well written article worthwhile, interesting and sometimes life changing also.
So keep writing till you feel satisfied.
10. Be a vociferous reader
Unless you read a lot you can never evolve into a good professional writer.
You should read different writing styles by different authors. Every good writer has his own unique writing style.
It makes you understand the nuances of writing better.
Your knowledge about topics improves.
Can you see how writing is actually taking with your pen?
But there is a slight difference. Your voice will not be heard. It will be read.
